Astor Place Hairstylists
Description
This Astor Place institution started in 1947 as a five-chair barbershop and has since grown to include 75 chairs. And somehow, it manages to retain a familiar old-timey feel. You can’t make an appointment; just take a number and wait outside with the crowd. (Sundays are typically less crowded, and the wait rarely exceeds 10 minutes.) Haircuts take 20 minutes or less and start at just $14. They also offer perms, color, braiding, extensions and Japanese straightening—all at equally reasonable prices. It’s exactly what you’d expect from a small-town barbershop.

I've been going to Jose at Astor Place ever since and I moved to NYC and he's the best! He knows exactly what I want and does a great job. Highly recommended to anyone!
I've been getting my hair cut at Astor Place for over 15 years. For the last few years, my guy has been Jose (to the immediate left of the entrance) and he is awesome. Always cuts to my exact wishes, great conversationalist and he even stocks my favorite hair wax (Bed Head). He often has a line so call ahead if you're on a tight schedule. For my money, Jose gives the best Mens' cuts. Lots of pretty ladies are clients of his as well. Great place. Great price.
Avoid at all costs. I got my hair cut by Ali (who has done good work for friends of mine), and it was a disaster. He disregarded every last one of my wishes and preferences, talked incessantly (without listening), burned me with the dryer and flatiron, and left me with a miserable, shapeless, unflattering cut. Buyer beware!
