Pro athletes and reluctant treadmillers alike agree on at least one thing: There’s nothing like a good song to get your energy level up. Happily, there are scads of classes in New York City that use catchy beats as inspiration for working up a sweat. With any luck, the rhythm is gonna get you…fit.

Cardio Dance Groove

Instructor Anthony “Trudog” Truly, who calls himself “NYC’s most visible homo rapper,” designs a new fitness routine weekly for his class at the JCC in Manhattan. Themes range from hip-hop (see playlist below) and disco to cheerleading (pom-poms included, of course). $20, free for JCC members. For more info, visit jccmanhattan.org.

Punk Rope

Hop to a hardcore beat (and a variety of other music) in Tim Haft’s class, which uses jump roping and unusual conditioning drills set to a careful (and timely) selection of songs.
