Tanesha Smith-Wattley, 31, Bluefly stylist (bluefly.com), Downtown Brooklyn
Her personal style: “Eclectic, for sure. I love pattern and color—the more the merrier!”
Her inspirations: “Various cultures, indigenous dressing—I really love to see how people dress in other places, and the Internet makes that easier than ever. I take a bit of an anthropological approach to fashion. That, mixed with ’70s France. I like to think of it as a mix of Grace Jones and Catherine Deneuve.”
Favorite stores: “Barneys, because it has everything. Ina in Soho for awesome designer consignment, and also Century 21 for Euro labels like Vivienne Westwood and Rick Owens.”
Her signature piece: “It’s more like a signature move: I’m almost always wearing something quirky, be it a cape, a leopard-print dress or a crazy scarf. I stole one of my favorite scarves from my mom and she got it at Chico’s. I would never walk into a Chico’s, but I’m glad she did!”
Favorite designer: “Stylist and jewelry designer Rachel Gilman (rachelgilmanjewelry.etsy.com) has a really awesome earring line. I really love the graphic shapes and the crazy color palette she uses.”
How she’d describe New York style: “Get in where you fit in; there is room for everyone. There isn’t really one label I could ever use to describe it, and that’s why it’s awesome.”
How her style has evolved over the past two decades: “I’ve developed more authority over my clothing choices. [Having] moved from suburban Ohio to now living in Brooklyn and working in fashion, I’ve gone from mall labels to stalking designer vintage. I’m comfortable residing outside of the box and just wearing something because I like it, regardless of whether or not it’s a current trend—I’m not by any means a skinny little thing, so it’s not like I’m going to adopt the Gaga pantsless look just because it’s current.”
