Single scenes: Studio Square
The scene: On weeknights, this beer garden (35-33 36th St between 35th and 36th Aves, Long Island City, Queens; 718-383-1001, studiosquarenyc.com) buzzes with relaxed young professionals from the neighborhood (with a few Manhattanites in the mix), who gather to down pints and scope each other out in a pressure-free zone. Frat guys, quiet observers, birthday groups and single girls coexist happily, holding down their own tables but mixing it up during trips to the multiple bars (located on an upper level that wraps around the perimeter of the sunken garden). On Thursday and Sunday evenings, live music ups the energy level, and on weekend nights, the normally chilled-out garden morphs into a mega hookup scene.—Tory Hoen
Percent single: 60%
Most common single type: Roving, small bands of beer-swilling straight guys
Ease of mingling: The shared tables encourage chatting between groups, and you’ll have plenty of time to check out the crowd during beer runs to the bar. The large space also makes it easy for a quick getaway if your pickup attempt goes awry.
