The Devil in Miss Jones (1973)
The hauntingly erotic hour-long feature from Deep Throat’s Gerard Damiano arouses the body and provokes the mind. Georgina Spelvin (a New York theater-turned-porn actor) stars as the demure virgin who slits her wrists in the bathtub, ending up in purgatory despite her impeccable morals. As the tag line explains, “If you have to go to Hell, go for a reason,” and so Miss Jones does when she’s granted the chance to live out the sinful activities absent from her previous life. Think art-house and existential meanderings in lieu of silicone tits (though you still have your come shots, threesomes and plenty of anal), with an ending that borrows from Jean-Paul Sartre’s No Exit. With an orchestral score and a glut of religious allegories, Damiano’s work is not light fare. Without the double-penetration scene, it could’ve won an Oscar.

The Weirdos and the Oddballs (1971)
In grindhouse king Eduardo Cemano’s low-budget flick (also known as Zora Knows Best), nympho Zora (Dolly Sharp) and her husband, Sasha (Fred J. Lincoln), pose as morally questionable sex therapists, offering their “services” via an ad in The Village Voice. (Hippocrates might have objected to their methodology). Prepare for a free-lovin’ “screwball” comedy, set in NYC.

Naked Came the Stranger (1975)
From the sexploitation genre comes Henry Paris’s (a.k.a. Radley Metzger’s) Naked Came the Stranger, a tale of suburban radio-show host Gillian (Darby Lloyd Rains), who dabbles in her own extramarital pursuits after discovering her husband’s infidelity. The true interest of the film, however, lies in the NYC literary scandal that surrounded the novel on which Naked is based: In 1969, 24 Newsday reporters collaborated under the nom de plume “Penelope Ashe” in an effort to mock contemporary fiction—proving that an explicit sex scene was all it took to mount the best-seller list.

Streets of New York and New York Taxi Tales Series (1990s)
Prolific director-producer Neville Chambers’s creations are chock-full of city smut in highly trafficked urban locations. Postviewing, you may think twice before hailing a cab…or, frankly, leaving your apartment.

Joe Gallant’s Avenue X (2006)
Sci-fi fanatic? Incensed by the Patriot Act? Down for some good ol’ trippy fucking? Pop in Joe Gallant’s last NYC opus, Avenue X, for a date with Big Brother. As Gallant explained in an interview with Fleshbot, “It takes place in 2010, in NYC, at a time immediately after the outright purchase of the U.S. government by global conglomerates. Into this fascist stew arrives a benevolent alien intelligence with a powerful gift for mankind…oh, and there’s a ton of hot, greasy anal/ATM throughout, along with a lot of my chamber music and big slabs of industrial noise. We shot it all over NYC, in the Mojave Desert and in downtown L.A. It’s like Natural Born Killers meets Alphaville.”

Michael Lucas’ La Dolce Vita (2006)
If it weren’t for the intensely graphic BJ scene that shortly follows, this film’s opening could be the basis of a new fashion reality show on Bravo: Scantily clad male models strut down the catwalk in studded belts (the kind featured in Vogue, not at the Folsom Street Fair) while being ogled by impeccably dressed gay Manhattanites. Sultry glances are exchanged by Zoolander doppelgängers as the party throbs into the night. Cue a cityscape—the twinkle of skyscrapers, the glimmer of the Hudson—then cut to the XXX threesome that lasts and lasts (and suddenly we’re not watching Project Runway anymore). With more than three hours of video, this two-part epic by local porn mogul Michael Lucas gets deep inside the gossip, scandal and well-toned bods of Gotham’s playboys.

Joanna’s Angels 2: Alt. Throttle (2006)

Gaytanamo (2007)
Anal fucking, fisting and bondage (oh my!) make for one hard-core military-themed flick, brought to you by NYC gay production company Dark Alley. When the wrongfully accused German tourist Danny Fox is captured and sent to a secret detention center for terrorists, things get rough, as Gaytanamo proves to be “full of ‘torture’ techniques not approved by the Geneva Convention.” Want to know the nitty-gritty? Sorry—we have a strict “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Candida Royalle’s AfroDite Superstar (2007)
Tasteful and femme-friendly, Royalle’s best-seller follows self-proclaimed “BAP” (black American princess) turned street-talkin’, Lil’ Kim–stunt-pulling superstar AfroDite (Simone Valentino) on her quest to self-discovery—and carnal conquest. Set in Harlem, AfroDite’s features women who quote Gloria Steinem and refuse to have their “power” diminished by dudes. There’s more story line than smut, but with a steamy masturbation scene and both sapphic and hetero lovin’, AfroDite Superstar is feminist porn for dummies, in the best sense.

Audacia Ray’s The Bi-Apple (2007)
Those who “like to watch” will find a kindred spirit in Simone (Simone Valentino, see above), the sexual researcher sent to conduct fieldwork on bisexuality in the Big Apple. Her subject: “The Fuckhouse,” an apartment where self-described sluts love freely. Though Simone’s advised to “keep her pants on and hands visible,” she quickly goes native. We’re privy to girl-on-girl, guy-on-guy and girl-on-guy action, plus an impromptu ménage à trios in which the ass takes a leading role. Thanks to very real bodies, a racially diverse cast, loads of toys and a precoitus meditation scene (to align their chakras, naturally), watching the The Bi-Apple is like walking in on your cool, attractive neighbors, who would really like it if you’d come again.
