Description
Josh DeChellis (Sumile) returns to his strengthJapanese foodat this West Village tempura shrine. The eatery sticks to simple decor, with a chalkboard menu, white tiled walls and marble-topped tables. A dip in the fryer is good for both animals and veggies: Calamari stays soft, scallops are juicy, and eggplant and shiitakes are wonderfully fleshy. For some deep-South-meets-East flavor, try the chicken-fried steak po boy. Mercifully, a house-made green-tea cupcake was a palate-soothing (and unfried) finale.
