Description
Eric Goode and Sean MacPherson (both of the Park and Maritime Hotel), along with Vanity Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter, have breathed new life into this West Village mainstay, which has been open in some form since 1920. The high-profile owners kept the uneven wooden floors, low ceilings and ivy-covered patio, and added a dose of panache—velvet curtains and a mural by New Yorker cover artist Edward Sorel. The casual menu consists of bistro bites and comfort-food staples. The city may not need another tuna tartare, but the version here is fantastic. And the best news yet: Half of the dozen or so entrées cost less than $20. Reservations are currently handled only via a private number—good luck getting in.

Mon–Thu 5–10pm; Fri, Sat 5–11pm; Sun 11:30am–3pm, 5–10pm.
