This 200-seat version is three times larger than any of the previous branches, and about three times as ambitious, too, serving lots of red meat in addition to the legendary baked treats. Unfortunately, asking Sarabeth Levine for a proper steak is like asking Peter Luger for a fluffy quiche. The results are middling, at best. A perfectly cooked turkey burger, with Gruyère and avocado, however, rises to exceptional status on account of its rich brioche bun. And even if you were compelled to sit and sip on the awning-covered sidewalk perch, you wouldn’t want to stay for long: Central Park South’s horse lineup makes the block smell like the world’s most expensive unkempt stable.
