Description
This light and airy café has a groovy yet sophisticated vibe and meals to match: vegan, skillful, elegant and flavorful. Candle Café is a neighborhood favorite where everyone is treated like regulars by the friendly, patient staffused to dealing with hardcore vegans, celiacs and allergy-prone eaters (theres even a gluten-free menu, just like at the eaterys more upscale sister spot, Candle 79). Summer rolls with tofu sing with freshness, the paradise casserole (a layered hunk of sweet potato, black beans and millet) is a heavenlythough not heavyconcoction, and chipotle tofu is a perfectly spiced treat.

I have been a vegetarian my entire life. I have suffered through countless "vegetarian meals" and side dishes etc. Yet believe it or not I am a total foodie. I was delighted to find myself at Candle 79 for my birthday. We had smoothie's at the bar while waiting for my table. Fresh, delicious & made from scratch. Then the menu was not only seasonal, gourmet, delicious. But impeccably presented in the true gourmet style that usually is not afforded vegetarians. Service was top notch!
Five stars over four simply due to the unquestionable freshness of the base produce. Regardless of a vegan palate the food tends towards a timid approach to an opportunity to really showcase the potential for this vegan cusine. Although I recognise the fact that a consistent adherece to this diet amy creat a palte more sendsitive to spice and herb influeunce, it is still shy of its potential. I must applaud the chich pea entree as it faithfullly executed the potential of the dish.
