Description
Appearance isn’t everything, but in Brasserie 8 ’s case, it’s up there. Survey the minimalist decor: a grand, snaking staircase and extra-deep leather banquettes. Marvel at Fernand Léger’s only known stained-glass piece, which divides the open kitchen from the dining room. Chef Julian Alonzo, who studied under David Bouley, creates a suitably modern dining experience: Black-sesame-studded tuna tartare is served with fresh-grated wasabi; and a lump-crabmeat cake finds a fresh edge in its side salad of sea beans and razor-thin artichoke slices. The devil’s-food Ring Ding dessert is deliciously amusing.
