Today, the Algonquin can be thankful that the Round Table of celebrated ’20s and ’30s writers no longer hangs here, because they might turn their barbed wit on the menu. The food isn’t bad, but the prices are high, and dishes are often conceived with too many clashing or poorly executed components, such as an undercooked “baked” apple that accompanied the chicken, or an overly sweet corn bisque that drowned the crab cakes. Desserts followed a similar pattern: Pineapple that was billed as “grilled” and “caramelized” arrived still pale, firm and barely warm. Still, the murals and dark oak paneling make the restaurant an elegant place to chat over a midday meal. Just follow the example of the Round Table, and make it a liquid lunch.
