Description
Despite its celebrated consulting chef (Ryan Skeen, formerly of Resto), this Fort Greene eatery from onetime Gilt pastry cook Nicholas Morgenstern fails to live up to the hype. Too-tiny small plates include chewy candied bacon and dense pork meatballs in tomato gravyappealing enough, but not as memorable as the versions Skeen offered at Resto. Given Morgensterns background, youd expect the restaurant to come through with an impressive finale. Sadly, while his rich chocolate-hazelnut pudding and buttery peach crisp delivered, not much else did. Still, in the warmer months, Morgenstern breaks out of the kitchen and on to the street with a hand-built cart for his house-made ice creams and frozen yogurts (check out the latest flavors at twitter.com/greeneicecream).

The General Greene is rubbish. Look at the Yelp reviews to get a real sense of the restaurant. The food is poorly prepared, overpriced and under-portioned (I know it's supposed to be "small plates," but even then...). The staff is useless and the ambiance is non-existent and the room is deafeningly loud. Also, despite effecting a kind of homespun, farm-to-table vibe the menu has few local or seasonal offerings. If you take nothing else from this comment hear this, they sell beer in tiny mason jars for $7 when the same beer could be had for $5 next door...in a pint glass!
