On the weekends, Tanoreen is packed with locals in love with the lamb-heavy cuisine of charming chef-owner Rawia Bishara. Break open a golden, football-shaped ball of kibbeh and be seduced by the savory aroma of ground lamb, onions and pine nuts. Bishara whips up ever-changing specials; if you’re lucky, you’ll drop by when she’s serving sublimely soft lamb-stuffed baby eggplant. Rose-water rice pudding is perfectly pleasant, but it’s just fluff compared to the must-have cheese knafeh. Served piping hot, pizza-style, this mammoth pie has a crust of shredded phyllo and a sweet-savory filling of oozing Arabic cheeses. Don’t even think about getting out of here in a hurry: There’s only one waiter.
