This Lower East Side restaurant has come to be regarded as the tastemaking cabin-in-the-’hood at the end of the now-legendary alley. In the oft-copied taxidermied environs, the hearty menu additions include a charred tender quail atop buttery grits, and a generous rabbit roulade entrée of boneless bacon-wrapped bunny (the signature bar snacks remain—there wasn’t even a question of tampering with the cult artichoke dip). Simple desserts—caramel-soaked bananas Foster, toasted carrot-walnut cake—are the sort you’d find in restaurants without a pastry chef. But they’re good enough.

This place is one of the first eateries to start the Gastropub trend that started in New York. Freemans has now become a Downtown LES classic. Which other restaurant in New York City is located at the end of a non-descript dark alley ? ( I think Commerce at Greenwich village is on a unique street but they’re not on an alley ). An absolutely must- order dish is the Artichoke Dip (believe me, it is worth making a trip just to taste this! ) Some of their dishes change by season, but the Beer Braised Pork Shank that I had there last time was soooo yummy -if you see it on the menu Cutie Patroller highly recommends you order it! The atmosphere inside is hip & cool and they are always busy. The space is dim and decorated with dark woods and stuffed taxidermy (eek!) but it has a very vintage feel to it, almost like an English country club in the middle of NYC. Currently, they now have an open upstairs area.

Took my girlfriend out on a date for her birthday. Location was very cool and bartender was great and made a fantastic Aquavit drink which she loved. Waiter service was a little too efficient with zero personality and hard to find at times: Not what I'd expect for a check that size. Still the decor and artichoke dip, along with the drinks would have me come back.
