Bombs in Your Mouth
Description
**** [4 STARS] Nothing could be more conventional than “bombs in your mouth,” a fractured family portrait about two siblings squabbling after their dad’s funeral. In an eerily familiar Midwestern kitchen (do they all keep couches downstage center?), Lily (Cass Bugge) and Danny (Corey Patrick) swap insults (“You’re being a total butthead!”), chug beer and generally do a middling "True West" imitation. There’s the same cursing, eating and home-truth telling; “bombs in your mouth” won’t be blasting a crater in the landscape of modern playwriting anytime soon. But while the Fringe offering may not be canon fodder, it does perfectly serve its purpose: showcasing actors to incredible advantage. The duo, aided by director Joseph Ward, creates a meticulously detailed world, capturing the squirmy, arm-punching affection between a brother and sister. Both actors dissolve totally into their roles: Every line seems invented in the moment. As a Fringe experience, the production’s professionalism comes as sweet relief. And as a theatrical one, it proves that tailor-made parts are always the best fit.--Helen Shaw, Theater Writer
