Champ: A Space Opera
Description
**** [FOUR STARS] According to its program notes, "Champ: A Space Opera" attempts to "cross borders and unite audiences, bringing together fans of rock music, contemporary dance and progressive theater for an hour-long spectacle of cosmic proportions.” Yeah, okay. But this aggressively weird goulash manages to not suck, mostly because it has plenty of that precious Fringe commodity: talent. The seven-piece band Champollion’s thrillingly tight indie-rock songs hug the story’s loopy sci-fi curves, while a troupe of five silent, supremely professional dancers enact each scene with impressionistic verve. As for the narrative: Granted, most rock operas have hazy story lines, but this makes "Tommy" seem like a Dick and Jane book. Take a cue from the surreal video projections and don’t ask too many questions.—Noah Tarnow, Copy Chief
