Description
Newcomer Zonya Love plays long-suffering Miss Celie in this flawed gospel-blues musical, adapted from Alice Walker’s heartbreaking and inspirational novel. Also, former pop star Chaka Khan has stepped into the heavy-hitting role of tough-mama Sofia (“Hell No!”). As for the show itself, its success rather depends on who’s in the lead. A trio of seasoned pop songwriters have crafted a mildly funky R&B score that bobs along pleasantly enough, but this version avoids the true pain and heartbreak of the source.—AFWhen
