Haircuts for the unemployed
Description
As jobs are so damn hard to find these days, it’s nice to see that local businesses are doing their part to help out-of-work New Yorkers make a great first impression. High-end salon Cristiano Cora Studio is offering gratis haircuts (retail value $100–$300) to the unemployed (bring proof or staffing agency documentation to receive a cut). The Meatpacking salon, which is lined with mod Italian leather chairs and stocked exclusively with the nature-friendly beauty brand Davines, will have you feeling like a million bucks.

I must say that just by reading about this AMAZING EVENT that Cristiano Cora Studio hosted on November 8th & 9th I was nearly brought to tears. To think that anyone in this terrible economy can even afford to give anything away, I COMMEND the entire staff at Cristiano's for giving up their time to help those in need. This I find quite ADMIRABLE. So I say to the critics "What have you given away for free besides NEGATIVE VIEWS about something so POSITIVE".
The people leaving positive comments about their so-called good experiences at the salon obviously have no firsthand knowledge about what happened the day that Yvette went to the salon and what happened to her and what her friends were told when they called the salon. Unless you were a witness to the occurrences, you should probably reserve comment. One look at the NYT photo gallery is really quite telling. Nearly all white.
I have to disagree with Yvette as well. I am a hispanic woman, who recieved a haircut by Cristiano Cora himself. It was beautiful event that was beautifully managed. I arrived at Cristiano's studio a little after 11am and was given a 2pm appointment with Cristiano himself. He did an incredible job on my hair and his staff was very professional and warm. Overall it was a very heart-warming and up-lifting experience. Thank you Cristiano for the amazing job you did with my hair!!!
I would like to thank Cristiano and his staff for the amazing experience and ...haircut! I was at Cora Salon on Sunday afternoon and I received a A+ service for free...not bad at all!! Thank you so much. Best
I have to disagree with Yvette as I am hispanic and african american and I when I arrived at the salon, I was greeted with a smile and taken as soon as the next available slot was open. The salon was slammed and everyone was accommodating. Cristiano, you and your staff were amazing and I LOVE my new Haircut....PS I got the job!!
This kind of outreach to the unemployed is incredible. What a fantastic idea -- so helpful, so generous. Next time let us know earlier in advance so we can help out too! -The 405 Club: NY's Official (Un)Employment Support Network, on $405/week but rich in talent! http://the405club.com
These people are racists. The NYT article today with accompanying photographs demonstrate that they were only interested in giving haircuts to those of a certain demographic and if you were non-black, you would likely have been one of the recipients of their so-called good works. I should take legal action against them for their discriminatory conduct and lies. They failed to abide by the terms set forth in their ad in Time Out NY. Breach of contract anyone?
The bigots at this salon refused to cut my hair even though I was there well before 5:00 p.m. The receptionist lied and said that I couldn't get a cut because I had to make an appointment. As one of the commentators said in a posting above, he was told that there were no appointments because it was a charity event. They are straight up liars, and refused to give African-Americans haircuts and gave bogus excuses for not doing so. Take a look at the photos in the NYT today.
I was offered a 20% discount card - in other words an $80 haircut. Yea, right - like anyone who's unemployed can afford an $80 haircut. Shame on you.
I am unemployed and called this place about the free hair cuts. I was told I couldn't get an appointment since it was a charity event - it was walk-in only. That was understandable, I supposed. So I hopped on the train and traveled 40 minutes to get there, when I arrived I was told they were booked solid for the day, and they couldn't help me. Thanks for making me feel like a second-class citizen.
