Ching Chong Song + Jason Trachtenburg + The Wowz + Creaky Boards
Description
See “The Chong show,” page 107, for Ching Chong Song. Jason Trachtenburg, the non-little-kid musician in the Trachtenburg Family Slideshow Players, is underrated as a songwriter, and tonight’s solo gig is a good place to hear him sans slides and tot. The Wowz are kind of like a coked-up youth-group sing-along; the trio plays hyperchirpy, manic songs with ecstatic titles like “Nothin’ Would Be Better” and “Happy Today.” Watch out, though—their cheery outlook (ironic or not) is contagious. Andrew Hoepfner’s gentle, earnest voice spearheads Creaky Boards’ lighthearted antifolk-pop sound. The outfit uses tinny carnival piano and off-kilter horns to liven up its childlike lyrics.
