Late-blooming acoustic folk-blues singer-guitarist Chris Smither has been performing since the mid-’60s, but it’s only in the past decade that the wry, gruff-voiced picker’s emerged as a full-time recording and touring artist. He’s one of those musicians whose work sustains a level of quality for years without ever really garnering too much attention, but Diana Krall, for one, noticed and covered Smither’s “Love Me Like a Man.” His latest album, Time Stands Still, is so seeped in brown, nighttime tones, you can practically smell the cigarettes and old beer.
