We’ve heard few recent debuts as bold and provocative as Fionn Ó Lochlainn’s Spawn of the Beast. Not only does he demonstrate a knack for observant songwriting, but he’s an impressive guitarist and musters a vocal range that stretches from dry witticisms to power-crooning worthy of Jeff Buckley. The biggest surprises come in a drone-based cover of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” (complete with rustic uilleann pipes) and two transformed Frank Zappa tunes, “I Am the Slime” and “Dumb All Over.” Elsewhere, Ó Lochlainn cuts to the bone with the stark “Blues for America.”
