The Strangerer
Description
The phoniness of political discourse and its eerie disconnection from the bloody business of power are brought to the fore in Theater Oobleck’s droll look at the presidential debates between George Bush and John Kerry. Like Albert Camus’s novel The Stranger—from which it borrows liberally—Mickle Maher’s play examines morality through the distorting lens of absurdism, as Bush (Guy Massey) and Kerry (Maher) ignore questions about Iraq and bicker over how to murder moderator Jim Lehrer (Colm O’Reilly). A kissing cousin of sketch comedy, The Strangerer slides into repetition, and is at least 20 minutes overlong. But the writing is clever, and the performances first-rate.—AF
