Description
The charm of this musical’s original 1955 cast may have disguised the shambling silliness of its central story, in which a schlub sells his soul to become a baseball star. But John Rando’s stiff-jointed direction for Encores! Summer Stars draws little magic from the current company, which includes a campy Sean Hayes as the Devil, an appealing but tentative Jane Krakowski as his accomplice and a blank Cheyenne Jackson as the slugger. Despite Richard Adler and Jerry Ross’s enjoyably familiar, lightweight score, something is missing. The revival has “Heart,” but its beats are all off.—AF
