Description
In this screamingly funny revival of Christopher Durang’s dark comedy, the playwright walks us through a cartoonish portrait of his upbringing. At the center of the mess pirouettes Bette (the excellent Kate Jennings Grant), who insists on having babies in the face of certain failure while her husband, Boo (Christopher Evan Welch), flees to the bottle. Walter Bobbie’s stylizations dovetail perfectly with Durang’s. Performances tread the line between caricature and realism; everyone gets a gold star, and Victoria Clark and Julie Haggerty (as Bette and Boo’s mothers) should get a personal hug from each audience member.—HSWhen
