Description
For those who found last year’s Coram Boy enthralling, Nigerian playwright Biyi Bandele’s expansion of Aphra Behn’s 17th-century novella about an enslaved African king (played by an appropriately regal Albert Jones) is a colorful, percussive treat. The entire first half of the play, which includes many elaborate plot twists, is Bandele’s invention. The jarring shifts in tone may make audiences yearn for mood-stabilizing meds, but director Kate Whoriskey keeps the action moving so excitingly that you can hear your heart pounding in your ears, along with the African drums.—Raven Snook
