Description
This family-weepie-cum-play-of-ideas about atheism and faith is a bit like a religious service: generally predictable, with a mix of boring ritual, sweet sentiments and the rare flash of insight. To expect true ecstasy or enlightenment would be asking too much, but the lack of thrills might lead you to doubt the existence of God (or, for those of us living in the 21st century, artistic excellence). Still, Lynn Redgrave is marvelous as a hard-line English atheist professor horrified to learn that her son is contemplating the priesthood. There are plenty of robust speeches and daring ideas to enjoy as well.—DC
