Yellow Face
Description
In Leigh Silverman’s swift, pared-down production, playwright David Henry Hwang (lightly fictionalized and portrayed by Hoon Lee) regales us with horror stories from his showbiz past. With the self-deprecation knob at 11, Hwang’s avatar discusses the early ’90s Miss Saigon fracas, in which he took the lead in decrying Jonathan Pryce’s race-inappropriate casting. Hwang uses some fabricated fumbles as a springboard for discussing actual American racial missteps, like our whoops-a- daisy moment with maligned physicist Wen Ho Lee.—HS
