Description
Trembling at the center of Heidi Schreck’s devoutly peculiar medieval-themed comedy is her version of the real-life 14th-century religious mystic Margery Kempe (Sofia Jean Gomez), a fractious woman troubled by demons and irritating as hell. Schreck’s script has narrative simplicity, contemporary zing and lyrical flights of startling loveliness; if only director Leigh Silverman gave it the murk it needs. The production, despite championship acting, treads too lightly, and sheds some of its mysteries along the way.
