The Oldsmobiles
Description
An upper-middle-class, upper-middle-aged New York husband (the dozy Richard Masur) and wife (the feistier Alice Playten) prepare to jump off the Manhattan Bridge in Roger Rosenblatt’s flimsy, vaguely absurdist sketch. Flashes of sharp wit are dulled by hints of plaintive fogyism, accentuated by Jim Simpson’s rather defeated staging. This is an inconsequential look at matters of life and death: Ionesco ultra-lite. It is hard to respect the existential angst of characters that barely exist in the first place.—AF
