Description
The organizing strategy of Annie Baker’s unusual but absorbing new play is almost perverse: It depicts major life changes in the most low-key and off-angle ways imaginable. Alternating between theater games and short, elliptical scenes among the participants, Baker’s piece hardly seems like a play at all. But in a sneakily simple way, it gets at something complex and honest. Sam Gold’s excellent production is greatly abetted by an exceptional cast that comprises Deirdre O’Connell, Tracee Chimo, Heidi Schreck, Reed Birney and Peter Friedman.—AFWhen
