The Wiz
Description
Brains, heart, courage: These qualities are in short supply at the City Center revival of William F. Brown and Charlie Smalls’s 1975 hit, a blacked-up version of The Wizard of Oz. The score is funky fun, but the rest of The Wiz is a plump jive turkey. As Dorothy, the lost-looking R&B star Ashanti is overpowered by the baleful blandness of her role. And although other performers (including Tichina Arnold and LaChanze) pop through Thomas Kail’s scattered direction, the show makes you feel like Dorothy: You wish you could just go home.—AF
