The First Breeze of Summer
Description
The Signature’s new season, devoted to the Negro Ensemble Company, begins with Leslie Lee’s sprawling ’70s potboiler, a pleasantly overheated stew of race and sex and family prayer meetings. Leslie Uggams stars as Lucretia, a beloved grandma nestled in the bosom of her clan; in a luscious series of encounters, we see just how her younger self (Yaya Dacosta) managed to get such a brood. Concealed under its soapy surface, Breeze roils with hypocrisy and the costs of human sexuality, but despite scattered excellence, some of the actors can’t handle Lee’s complex characterizations.—HS
