Elizabeth Rex
Description
Timothy Findley’s historical drama focuses on the hours before the execution of Elizabeth I’s beloved Earl of Essex, as the queen—seeking distraction—spends a long evening with Shakespeare’s troupe. The play is at its most fascinating when depicting the clash between the shrill, violent and stubborn monarch (the manly Stephanie Barton-Farcas) and Ned Lowenscroft (Michael DiGioia), a feisty, quick-witted, emotional actor known for his feminine roles. A surfeit of subplots unbalances the show, but Joanne Zipay’s gritty direction keeps the importance and dangers of distraction in full view.—Aaron Riccio
