Matthew Sweet, author of the power-pop near masterstroke Girlfriend, teamed up with ex-Bangle Susanna Hoffs to record a cluster of beloved mid-’60s songs for Under the Covers Vol. 1, and recently delivered Vol. 2—on which the pair pays tribute to hits from the 1970s. Truth be told, Sweet and Hoffs could stand to be a little less respectful here, particularly when they’re taking on something as familiar as Mott the Hoople’s “All the Young Dudes,” which just sounds like professional-grade karaoke. Still, when they hit a sweet spot like the dreamy chorus in the Raspberries’ “Go All the Way,” you have to admire their devotion to the primary text.
