Description
As part of Charles Mingus’s Jazz Workshop, alto saxman Charles McPherson probably heard the phrase “stop copying Bird” more than most of his peers—even after he’d developed his own style. Funnily enough, when Clint Eastwood needed a Parker substitute for Bird the biopic, he called on McPherson to do the honors. Tonight McPherson’s the cause célèbre; joining him on the bandstand are trumpeter Tom Harrell, pianist Jeb Patton, bassist Ray Drummond and drummer Willie Jones III.When
