Gabriel Alegria’s Afro-Peruvian Sextet grapples with the challenge of jazz harmony and form while delighting in Peruvian lando and festejo rhythms, employing indigenous percussion—cajón, cajita, quijada—alongside the standard trumpet, tenor sax, bass and drums. Alegria’s debut CD, Nuevo Mundo, highlights the trumpeter’s original compositions, including “El Norte,” “El Sur” and “El Mar”—pieces full of color and drive, reflecting an immersion in the black music of Peru’s coastal regions.When
