As heard on his recent Eretik (Smalls), Perry’s sound is so pristinely inventive that it brings to mind names like Bud Powell, Red Garland and Phineas Newborn Jr. (Singer Nellie McKay—who’s no slouch at the ivories—once told us that she wouldn’t want to face Perry in a piano joust.)When
