If only director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell and his creative partners had found as many gradations of romantic comedy as pink for this hectic, empty movie-to-musical spectacle. Although the original Reese Witherspoon movie was frothy fun, the stage version’s weak book, synthetic tweener-pop score and Mitchell’s busy, incessant dances make it more of an eyesore and earsore than a guilty pleasure. And here’s the latest crass development: MTV reality-TV contestant Bailey Hanks has won the coveted lead role of Elle Woods.—DC
