Description
John Waters’s 1988 film served as the blueprint for this candy-colored celebration of teen lust and 1960s kitsch, in which a chubby girl becomes a dance star and works toward racial integration in Baltimore. Marc Shaiman’s sonic-sugar score is as insanely catchy as ever; if the finale doesn’t set your toes a-tapping, you need to get new toes.—AF
