Description
Is Manhattan Theatre Club trying to shed deadwood subscribers? That’s one way to explain its programming of Caryl Churchill’s dark, difficult but enormously rewarding classic. A pessimistic socialist critique of me-too feminism, the twisty 1982 script jumps from transhistorical fantasia to kitchen-sink naturalism, exploring the emotional and social wreckage of capitalist female empowerment. This is smart and dense material, not empty escapism for the lazy theatergoer. British director James Macdonald turns in a wonderfully lucid and hard-nosed production with a dream cast: Elizabeth Marvel, Martha Plimpton, Marisa Tomei and four other brilliant ladies burn brightly in one of the best productions of the season.—DC

The combination of phoney accents, more than one character talking at the same time, and the completely unintelligible last word uttered by Angie to end the play made the evening perfectly dreadful for three of us who went together.
