Description
Director Daniel Sullivan delivers a mixed but enjoyable revival of Harold Pinter’s semiabsurdist 1965 drama about vicious power dynamics in a squalid family of men vying for control. Even though the cast is stuffed with talent—Ian McShane (Deadwood), Raúl Esparza, Michael McKean—only half of them understand the intensity and stillness required to make Pinter’s inscrutable language work. McShane unwisely plays his character—a demented ogre of a father—like a capering, aging dandy. As the only woman in the room, Eve Best tames them all with the power of her simple, sensual approach. Still, this isn’t a bad introduction to a 20th-century stage classic.—DCWhen
