Description
This world premiere of a recently discovered 1898 farce by Mark Twain—freely adapted by David Ives—is in a category of its own: not quite original and not quite an encore. It’s a new chestnut, and tasty as such. Painter Jean-François Millet (an impishly gleeful Norbert Leo Butz, having a ball in a gown) fakes his death to drive up the value of his paintings, then impersonates his own sister. Michael Blakemore skillfully stages the farcical action, with a top-drawer bunch of supporting players.—AF
