Description
Tracy Letts’s new work has a built-in nostalgia for the sugarcoated, grease-infused confections of its title. And why not? The play is just such a snack itself, old-fashioned in its style and proudly humble. Don’t expect the gritty Letts of Bug or Killer Joe, much less the piercing one of August: Osage County; although it takes a turn for the violent, this tale of an introverted, ponytailed shop owner (Michael McKean) and his charismatic young black employee (the energetic, charming Jon Michael Hill) is essentially sitcom fare with a scare factor, like an especially sharp episode of Chico and the Man. On the Lear scale, the play owes more to Norman than King.—AFWhen
