Description
Even if you never grew a mullet or banged your head at a Quiet Riot concert, this insanely fun mixtape musical will hit your retro sweet spot. A parade of pop and metal ballads (by the likes of Journey, Twisted Sister, REO Speedwagon et al.) fits beautifully with Chris d’Arienzo’s impish, self-mocking book. It’s Urinetown for the I Love the 80s crowd. Kristin Hanggi’s frisky staging bursts with visual gags. Still think it’s just a cheap jukebox goof? Rock of Ages shatters irony with a killer drum solo, then melts the wreckage with a smoking guitar riff. The delightful Kerry Butler (Xanadu) is now in the cast.—DC
