Description
Book writer and now director Arthur Laurents has piloted his infamous gang members, the Jets, out of lovable-ruffian territory into a darker zone, where they often exude a sense of reckless menace. That’s good, since Matt Cavenaugh’s Tony never lets you forget you’re watching a musical. Karen Olivo’s Anita offers a potent mix of sexual bravado and streetwise sadness, and Josefina Scaglione embodies Maria with heart-lifting simplicity. Of course the chief glory of this classic is the Leonard Bernstein score, terrific sounding with a full orchestra. Overall, this subtly recalibrated revival is Broadway in very fine form: standing up to face darkness head on, and unafraid to be a thing of beauty.—AF

I loved the show. The music is incredible, the dancing superb, the singing beautiful, and the acting the best in a musical on Broadway. I am sure multiple Tony Awards are on the way.
My family and I saw West Side Story yesterday, and for me, it is a BIG disappointment. The cast, although pleasant in performance, never evoked any connection in emotion. They were bland, and that's a shame for such a tension filled play. The exception would be the actress who played Anita. Also, using Spanish for two prominent songs was extremely distracting and unnecessary. A lot of money was spent for a big let-down!
