Description
It ain’t the best of times, but Lord knows we’ve seen worse: This bombastic tuner doesn’t stink like month-old Camembert. But Jill Santoriello’s derivative score sounds like it was composed on tracing paper over Les Misérables, and although director-choreographer Warren Carlyle does his best to move the Dickens-inspired epic along, the book and score never mesh. Despite a valiant central performance by James Barbour, this odd throwback to ’80s Broadway could be dubbed Les Missables.—DC
