This is a New York phenomenon—a perpetually hip bistro that’s always bustling with an upscale, fashionable crowd, including art-world wheeler-dealers and wanna-be Candace Bushnells. The long wooden bar is often packed with people waiting to be seated, so there are swells of activity around an extended dinnertime. The restaurant appeals to Wall Street suit-and-tie types as well, but the majority of the bar’s habitués are well-off downtowners who treat the place like it’s their local Cheers. “How’s the kids?” asks the bartender of a designer-clad couple, who contentedly sip their $11 martinis.
