Description
Creatures of the night come to nest at this subterranean East Village bar, where the lights are low, the patrons well-heeled and the drinks properly stiff. Stake out one of the stylish pressed-tin tables, nibble on house-marinated olives and sip a proprietary Blue Owla sultry mix of Millers gin, maraschino liqueur and fresh lemon juice.
Hours
Mon, Tue, Sun 5pm–2am; Wed–Sat 5pm–4am.
The Blue Owl has laid-back lounge style, mostly because of its professional bartenders and bouncers, plus the fact that its owner has terrific sense and is always around. He gives the place intimacy and it shows. The Blue Owl is near Union Square, too, on Second Avenue at 12th Street, which makes it perfect for drinking after hours. There is a small (but good) menu, and good coffee; but the real treats at the Blue Owl are the music and the wonderful, numerous cocktails.
The Time Out description is accurate. The Blue Owl has a strong combination of good prices and above-average, cool New York lounge atmosphere. Lots of brass, lots of brown, wood-style furnishing. Candles, cushions, mirrors, and low lighting. Music is jazz and eclectic and modern blues (not too loud), and Wednesday has specials. Good Lower East Side lounge for a proper, mellow drink in the right atmosphere. Bring a date or business associate. Impress.
