Immigration Tango

A marriage scam turns into a predictably complicated mess.

By Andrew Schenker

When an American couple agrees to enter into fake, INS-foiling marriages with their best friends—Carlos (Leon), a self-described “Latin lover” from Colombia, and his hottie Russian girlfriend, Elena (Portnoy)—complications predictably ensue, even if hilarity doesn’t. Girlfriend swapping was never so dull! David Burton Morris’s tepid rom-com induces more discomfort than laughter or the pitter-patter of hearts; worse, the film apparently views romance as a whites-only affair, with both Carlos and a “comically” overweight black immigration officer being cruelly denied the affection the Caucasian characters freely indulge in. Every move is a misstep.
