DETOX FROM...
...duh, toxins. The ones in your bloodstream.
Change your clothes
Sweating, say the old wives, clears the skin and body of the bad stuff. If you’re not ready to share a bathhouse bench with a bunch of Russians, pick up a Sauna Suit (saunasuit.us, $90). It looks like a regular tracksuit but is made of nylon, and traps body heat to make you super sweaty, even if you exercise just a little bit. NB: If you’re cheap—and you’ll be working out in a zone even more judgment-free than Crunch—just mummify yourself in Saran Wrap. Personal trainers will warn you, though, if you choose this sweat technique, you should be careful to remain hydrated, and stop exercising if you start feeling dizzy or ill. The Sauna Suit folks suggest wearing a T-shirt underneath to catch all your sweat, and urge you to remove the thing immediately after your workout.
Step into a sauna
Shvitz like the czars at midtown’s Okeanos, where $50 buys you a half day in a traditional Russian sauna ($90 for the full day), followed by a traditional platza treatment (another $50), in which birch leaves are brushed against your skin. Finally, you’ll get an invigorating dunk in cold water. 211 E 51st St between Second and Third Aves (212-223-6773, okeanosclubspa.com)
Stretch while you sweat
Incorporate strengthening and relaxation techniques into your detox with Bikram yoga. The 100-degree-plus heat will flush last night’s mac and cheese from your body, while the sustained poses work your muscles. Bikram Yoga Union Square, 841 Broadway between 13th and 14th Sts, suite 608 (212-929-8926). Basic introductory week package $20.—Michael P. Ventura
